Scott Stapp, lead singer for the band Creed, is opening up about his mental illness and substance abuse, after a breakdown last fall that left him hospitalized.

"I had a psychotic break that was brought on by alcohol and drug abuse," Stapp told PEOPLE magazine.

After months of increasing dilusions, Stapp was admitted to a duel diagnosis facility, where he was diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder. Although he initially found the diagnosis hard to handle, his wife has helped him to accept it.

"There's a stigma associated with it. But Jaclyn kept telling me, 'Embrace it. We love you.' It became a big sign of relief, because finally, we had an answer," he said.

Now, Stapp is on medication for his bipolar, and attends 12-step meetings to address his addiction.

"Nothing is more important than my sobriety," he said.
