Superstar swimmer Michael Phelps will be entering a treatment program following his arrest last week on DUI charges.

"I recognize that this is not my first lapse in judgment, and I am extremely disappointed with myself,” said Phelps, who was also found driving while intoxicated in 2004. “I'm going to take some time away to attend a program that will provide the help I need to better understand myself."

Phelps, 29, has been suspended from swimming for six months, meaning that he is unable to participate in any events sanctioned by USA Swimming, until April 6, 2015. He will also be forced to miss the 2015 World Championships.

"Michael's conduct was serious and required significant consequences," said Chuck Wielgus, USA Swimming executive director. "We endorse and are here to fully support his personal development actions."
