Nicole Camille Richie, 31, earned a regular appearance in myriad tabloid publications, as paparazzi dogged her to gather photos and stories of her in the throes of addiction and alcoholism during her 20s.

The adopted daughter of Lionel Richie rose to fame for her role in the Fox reality show, “The Simple Life,” in which she co-starred with her childhood friend, Paris Hilton. The massive hit premiered in 2003 with 13 million viewers.

Richie had many run-ins with the law surrounding drug and alcohol abuse, and also was rumored to have an eating disorder.

After dropping significant weight between seasons in 2006, she was famously quoted as saying, “I am not anorexic. I am not bulimic.” The same year she was taken to the hospital for dehydration and other medical issues, but still denied an eating disorder.

Still later in 2006, she was arrested for drunk driving and admitted to getting high on drugs before the incident.

Today a successful fashion designer, actress, singer and TV personality, she is also clean and sober. She married Joel Madden in 2010 and the couple have two children.

Of her recovery, in 2012 she told the U.K. magazine Style,"People ask me, do I blame Hollywood or my parents? No, I don't blame my parents. It had nothing to do with them. I created it and manifested it, and I got through it with the help of a lot of great people.”
